Understanding Currents

OceanWise Global > Newsletter Articles > Understanding Currents
Understanding_Currents

Accurate, real-time current measurement ensures safety is never compromised due to an incorrect assessment of the environmental conditions. We have created a White Paper which looks at the importance and value of reliable and real-time current information, such as speed and direction (or set and drift in nautical terminology), as a tool to aid safer and more efficient port and harbour operations.

Why do we need to better understand currents?

Both wind and currents have an impact on all vessels but particularly larger vessels. Whilst monitoring changing wind conditions is common practice in ports, it is not yet common practice to monitor real-time current variability. Bridging this data and knowledge gap with real-time current data helps with establishing fit-for-purpose, evidence-based risk assessments and procedures.

What does the White Paper cover?

  • Why you need to measure currents
  • How best to approach currents measurement
  • Sensor positioning and deployment
  • Getting the most out of your data

If you are interested in current measurement, considering including current measurement in your operations or just want to expand your understanding of this environmental component, then this guide is for you!
